A common mistake is treating Delhi only as a transit stop before Agra or Rajasthan. The capital deserves several days because its major sites are spread across Old Delhi, central New Delhi, South Delhi and newer urban districts.
Old Delhi
Old Delhi is associated with the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk and a dense network of lanes, markets and places of worship. The area can be intense for first-time visitors. A knowledgeable local guide may help explain history and navigate respectfully, but travellers should still maintain awareness of belongings and meeting points.
New Delhi and the central city
New Delhi's broad avenues and civic architecture contrast sharply with Old Delhi. India Gate, the government district, major museums, Connaught Place and nearby cultural institutions can be grouped according to current access and opening hours. Security restrictions may affect certain areas.
South Delhi heritage
Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, the Mehrauli area, Lodhi Garden and other sites show different periods of Delhi's development. Rather than racing between monuments, choose a few clusters and allow time for traffic. Many landmarks close on specific days or have changing ticket arrangements.
Food and neighbourhood experiences
Delhi's food ranges from street snacks and historic restaurants to regional cuisines from across India. Street food can be memorable, but hygiene and food tolerance matter. Markets and neighbourhoods such as Hauz Khas, Khan Market or contemporary arts districts offer a different perspective from monument-focused tourism.
Agra as an extension
Agra can be visited as a long day trip, but staying overnight often creates a less rushed experience. The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and nearby heritage places should be planned around current ticketing, closure days and seasonal conditions. Fatehpur Sikri may fit as a separate excursion or a stop toward Jaipur.
How long to stay
Three full days is a practical starting point for Delhi, with one or two additional days for Agra. Build extra time around international arrival, rail stations and airport transfers. Always verify current monument, transport and government information before departure.
